Blackman (1919), Briggs, West and Kidd (1920), and Fisher (1920) have shown that various estimates of growth processes over a period of time can be derived from primary growth data. These estimates are usually considered separately and are only rarely used together indirectly in considering growth processes. In the course of investigations involving the comparative growth of several species over a range of environmental conditions it has been found that the ratio of mean relative growth rate to mean relative rate of leaf area increase (R/RL) appears to have considerable biological importance and can also be used in the accurate determination of the mean unit leaf rate, i.e. net assimilation rate (E). |
